Collaborate towards inclusive economic participation

The Inhlanyelo Hub, a pivotal initiative at Unisa, is committed to fostering entrepreneurship among its staff, students, alumni and the broader community. The signing of a formal agreement between the Inhlanyelo Hub and the Marico Biosphere Reserve recently marked a significant step forward in its mandate. This collaboration aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 11, which aims to develop sustainable communities.

The Inhlanyelo Hub-Marico Biosphere Entrepreneurship Project is designed to enhance and promote entrepreneurial mindsets among micro and small businesses within the Marico area and among tourism operators within the Marico Biosphere Reserve. The project, set to span multiple years starting in 2024, is structured in three phases:

  • The first phase includes Ide8tion and BMC workshops for two cohorts within the Marico Biosphere Reserve community, focusing on business mentoring and coaching for new and existing entrepreneurs.
  • The second phase continues the support with business mentoring and coaching for those who successfully complete the initial workshops.
  • The third phase will concentrate on new venture creation and business growth, utilising platforms like Digifranchise and Inhlanyelo Connect.

It is important to note that this project is neither an employment scheme nor a funding scheme. Instead, it aims to empower communities to become economically active and potentially create employment through their activities. The focus is on fostering relationships and strengthening ecosystems within the community to ensure everyone has access to economic opportunities.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) outlines the collaboration agreement, which includes supporting community entrepreneurship programsme, venture creation, providing business advice, and facilitating the exchange of academic and professional resources. Additionally, it involves developing curricula and educational materials for community-based entrepreneurial ventures.

The MoU was officially signed during a ceremony at the Thlokomelo Community Centre in Groot Marico, North West. Dr Tapiwa Muzata and Prof Annemarie Davis represented the Inhlanyelo Hub. Daan van der Merwe represented the Marico Biosphere Management Authority, while Kagiso Mogapi represented the Youth Forum.

This partnership underscores the power of collaboration in driving inclusive economic participation and sustainable community development.
