English

Umthombo Wethemba (translated as The Spring of Hope), an anthology of poems in Zulu, aims to express joy and hope in a literary medium. The poems impart knowledge and at the same raises emotions of happiness, and produces reflections of wisdom, intelligence and comfort, in the context of the social conditions and environment that touch us as citizens of South Africa. The poems are characterized by brilliant language flowing in an accessible and yet refined style. They speak about real people with whose lives we can identify, brought together in a world in need of love and reform. The poet’s honesty and confidence enables him to draw a vivid picture of the world in which he was born and raised. Themes such as discrimination and human dignity, which have impacted the lives of all South Africans, alternate with themes such as championship, politics, love, unfavorable events, and dreams of freedom. All can enjoy the way that the poems connect us with our roots, and elucidate our feelings as we experience things now. They offer insight into our changing times, our thoughts on life, and the desire to pass on knowledge to generations beyond. The anthology can be read on two levels: purely for enjoyment, or as a tool to impart information to others
