Purpose statement: Qualifying students will develop an integrated understanding of the disciplinary, practical, pedagogical and situational knowledge application within the profession of Grade R teaching. Students completing this qualification will also be able to cultivate a practical understanding of teaching and learning in a diverse range of South African schools, in relation to educational theory and Grade R specialisation, practice and policy. This qualification also fosters self-reflexivity and self-understanding among prospective Grade R teachers in order to nurture commitment to the ideals of the Grade R teaching profession. This qualification also enables students to develop the professional dispositions and self-identity of students as Grade R teachers. Qualifying students will also develop dispositions and competences to organize learning among a diverse range of learners in diverse contexts; within the context of teaching in the Grade R. The primary purpose of The Grade R diploma is to ensure that qualifying students are able to facilitate Grade R learning ethically, professionally and innovatively in both rural and urban landscapes. Furthermore, on completion of the qualification, students will be able to implement and continuously adapt to national legislation / policies and guidelines governing and addressing Grade R teaching and learning in a coherent and purposeful manner. The purpose of this qualification is also to ensure that the qualifying student will be able to demonstrate an appropriate collaborative attitude and value the involvement of multiple stakeholders that contribute to Grade R teaching and learning success. Qualifying students will also be able to administer and manage Grade R teaching and learning effectively through best classroom practice in stimulating learning amongst Grade R learners. The Diploma is the minimum qualification for teachers in Grade R. Teachers are members of a profession whose definitive aim is to enable systematic learning. In order to prepare prospective Grade R teachers for this comprehensive role, the Diploma seeks to: -Develop and consolidate in an integrated way appropriate disciplinary, practical, pedagogical and situational knowledge. -Cultivate a practical understanding of teaching and learning in a diverse range of South African schools, in relation to educational theory and grade specialisation, practice and policy. -Foster self-reflexivity and self-understanding among prospective teachers. -Nurture commitment to the ideals of the teaching profession and an understanding of teaching as a profession. -Develop the professional dispositions and self-identity of students as teachers. -Develop students as active citizens and enable them to develop the dispositions of citizenship in their learners. -Promote and develop the dispositions and competences to organize learning among a diverse range of learners in diverse contexts |

Each Unisa qualification is structured in such a way that you need to pass a certain number of NQF level credits within a certain amount of time in order to graduate.
Pre-requisite: If Module A is a pre-requisite for Module B, you must pass Module A before you may register for Module B.
You may not register for more than the allowed maximum number of credits / modules per academic year and / or semester: 60 credits per semester or 120 credits per academic year.
The maximum number of credits do not include supplementary and / or aegrotat examinations from a previous semester. Modules taken for non-degree / non-diploma purposes also count towards the maximum number of credits allowed.

Language choices are dependent on the Home Language on your matric certificate. You MUST continue
with the Home Language stipulated on your certificate. The First Additional Language option is
English if it is not your Home Language. If English is your home language, you can choose either an
African language or Afrikaans as your First Additional Language. The Second Additional Language
(Communicative Competence) is then from a different group to your Home Language and First Additional
Language.
Example 1: Home language on Matric certificate is Sepedi, so you will take Sepedi Home Language.
You will then choose the English First Additional language options and you can choose either
Afrikaans or another African language (other than Sepedi) as your Second Additional Language.
Example 2: Home language on Matric certificate is English, so you will take English Home Language
(ENG1515). You can then choose any African language or Afrikaans as First Additional language
options and you can choose either Afrikaans or another African language (other than the one chosen
as First Additional language) as your Second Additional Language.
Example 3: Home language on Matric certificate is Afrikaans, so you will take Afrikaans Home
Language. You will then choose English (ENG1514) as First Additional language options and you can
choose either any African language as your Second Additional Language.
Important: All modules in Group A are compulsory. Select either a module from Group B (English as
Home Language) or Group C (English as First Additional Language) and select ONE Module from Group D
(Second Additional Language [communicative competence]).
Important: All modules in Group A are compulsory, based on the module selected at FIRST LEVEL from
Group B (Home Language) or Group C (First Additional Language), select a module from the same Group
at SECOND LEVEL. If English is selected from Group B, select any TWO modules from Group E, if
English is selected from Group C, select any TWO modules from Group D. The modules selected from
Group D or E must be from the same language group and may not be the same language selected in Group
D at FIRST LEVEL
