Dr Nicky Tjano
Acting Director of Teaching and Learning overseeing Portfolio Teaching and Learning strategy

Nicky Tjano currently serves as the Acting Director of Teaching and Learning overseeing Portfolio Teaching and Learning strategy, strategic projects and portfolio performance. His previous role encompasses curriculum and learning development, reflecting his commitment to enhancing educational practices within the institution. Prior to these roles, he was as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Business Management at UNISA. His academic contributions include research and publications that focus on governance and corporate sustainability, AI in education, big data and academic integrity. He is also recognized for his involvement in community engagement and student support initiatives at the university through number of awards and accolades.

His professional credentials include being a Microsoft Certified Educator (MCE),qualified Risk Management and governance practitioner, a registered assessor and moderator with the ETDP SETA and certifications in Total Quality Management and Financial Performance measurement and Control.

His work reflects a strong dedication to advancing educational tech and strategies, risk and governance, technology-enhanced learning and fostering leadership and sustainability.

  • He is serving on the number of committees responsible for reviewing institutional policies such as the Assessment, Tuition, CODEL, Travel, Policy on students with disabilities, AI policy, as well as the Policy on Academic integrity
  • He is currently co-chairing the University’s AI Task Team responsible for spearheading and socialising AI policy and guidelines into T&L and research.
  • Currently working with UNESCO an AI integration into curriculum for African TVET sector.
  • He is member of SABS AI Standards and protocols committee responsible for the development of National AI Standards
