Prof Nokuthula Hlabangane
Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology at Unisa

Nokuthula Hlabangane earned her PhD in Anthropology from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2012, with a thesis on the political economy of teenage sexuality in Soweto during the HIV/AIDS era. This work sparked her deep engagement with the philosophy and politics of knowledge production.

Drawing on transdisciplinary literature, she critically examines how research is shaped, silenced, or constrained by Eurocentric frameworks. Her focus on “researching research” foregrounds voice not only as what is spoken, but also what is unsaid or cannot be said.

Committed to decolonizing knowledge, she writes on social and epistemic justice, youth wellbeing, and Afrikan philosophies. She teaches in the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology at Unisa and is active in decolonial scholarship.
