Dr Rakwena Monareng
Director of Language Services at UNISA

Rakwena Reginald Mpho Monareng is Director of Language Services at UNISA and former CEO and Interim Chairperson of the Pan South African Language Board. He previously headed the Language Unit at the University of Johannesburg and taught at Wits, UJ, UNISA, UWC, UCT, Vista, and RAU, specializing in multilingualism, TESOL, applied linguistics, and educational linguistics.

His research focuses on applied language studies, critical discourse analysis, and language policy. Widely published, he has presented internationally and served on editorial boards of accredited journals.

He has held leadership roles in SAALA, SAALT, and NAETE, and successfully advocated for South African Sign Language’s recognition as an official language. His qualifications span linguistics, applied language studies, and executive development.
