Mathabo Nakene-Mginqi is the Vice-Principal ICT and CIO at the University of South Africa (UNISA), leading the institution’s digitalisation strategy to improve student success, research outputs, and curriculum delivery.

She has stabilised UNISA’s information systems, ending years of recurring system failures, and ensured smooth student registration cycles since historically problematic periods following the 2004 UNISA–TSA merger. Mathabo has overseen nine successful online examination sittings and saved the university over R26 million by optimising Moodle and improving productivity.

She developed UNISA’s Moodle Infrastructure Capability framework and manages an ICT project portfolio of R760 million, delivering more than 60% of value to production. Her leadership has strengthened governance, boosted ICT performance, and advanced innovation. She holds an MSc in Project Management
