Rules: A student who has successfully completed this qualification will be able to teach from Grade 4 to 7.Teaching Practice is a compulsory component in this program and must be taken according to the specific criteria every year. Five weeks practical is required every year, and three weeks must be offered consecutively. This qualification comprises both semester and year modules. Year modules may only be registered during the January registration period of each academic year. Students must also register themselves with SACE (South African Council for Educators) from the first year of BEd registration. Please visit the SACE website for more information: https://www.sace.org.za/ With the migration from the non-aligned BEd to aligned BEd, transitional arrangements have been approved by the College of Education unique to this specific degree and is not transferable to any other qualification. IMPORTANT: Students must register the relevant Teaching Methodology in each year of registration with the applicable Teaching Practice module of the academic level. UNISA reserves the right to cancel any teaching practice module that is not registered concurrently with the relevant teaching methodology. Note that SPE1505, SPE1507, SPE1508, SPE2604, SPE2605, SPE2606 and SPE2607 have been replaced by NSO1505, NSO1507, NSO1508, NSO2604, NSO2605, NSO2606 and NSO2607. Students who have passed the SPE modules do not need to do the NSO modules. |

Purpose statement: The primary purpose of the BEd Intermediate Phase teaching programme is to ensure that qualifying graduates are able to demonstrate integrated knowledge of the main areas of the fields and disciplines associated with Intermediate Phase teaching. Qualifying graduates will thus be equipped to teach Intermediate Phase learners the values, skills and knowledge necessary to prepare them for the Senior and Further Education and Training phases. Furthermore, on completion of the qualification, graduates will be able to implement and continuously adapt to national legislation / policies and guidelines governing and addressing Intermediate Phase teaching and learning in meaningful and innovative ways and interact effectively with the public and stakeholders. The purpose of this qualification is also to empower graduates to apply theoretical and practical knowledge in any Grade 4, 5, 6 and 7 class in the South African context. The BEd in Intermediate Phase teaching is an initial teaching qualification intended to develop qualified classroom teachers in the Intermediate Phase in schools. Teachers are members of a profession whose definitive aim is to enable systematic learning. In order to prepare prospective teachers for this comprehensive role, the BEd programme seeks to: A. Develop and consolidate in an integrated way appropriate disciplinary, practical, pedagogical and situational knowledge. B. Cultivate a practical understanding of teaching and learning in a diverse range of South African schools, in relation to educational theory, phase and/or subject specialisation, practice and policy. C. Foster self-reflexivity and self-understanding among prospective teachers. D. Nurture commitment to the ideals of the teaching profession and an understanding of teaching as a profession. E. Develop the professional dispositions and self-identity of students as teachers. F. Develop students as active citizens and enable them to develop the dispositions of citizenship in their learners. G. Promote and develop the dispositions and competences to organize learning among a diverse range of learners in diverse contexts. |

Each Unisa qualification is structured in such a way that you need to pass a certain number of NQF level credits within a certain amount of time in order to graduate.
Pre-requisite: If Module A is a pre-requisite for Module B, you must pass Module A before you may register for Module B.
You may not register for more than the allowed maximum number of credits / modules per academic year and / or semester: 60 credits per semester or 120 credits per academic year.
The maximum number of credits do not include supplementary and / or aegrotat examinations from a previous semester. Modules taken for non-degree / non-diploma purposes also count towards the maximum number of credits allowed.

Language choices are dependent on the Home Language on your matric certificate. You MUST continue
with the Home Language stipulated on your certificate. The First Additional Language option is
English if it is not your Home Language. If English is your home language, you can choose either an
African language or Afrikaans as your First Additional Language. The Language of Conversational
Competence is then from a different group to your Home Language and First Additional Language.
Example 1: Home language on Matric certificate is Sepedi, so you will take Sepedi Home Language.
You will then choose the English First Additional language option and you can choose either
Afrikaans or another African language (other than Sepedi) as your Language of Conversational
Competence.
Example 2: Home language on Matric certificate is English, so you will take English Home Language
(ENG1515). You can then choose any African language or Afrikaans as First Additional language
options and you can choose either Afrikaans or another African language (other than the one chosen
as First Additional language) as your Language of Conversational Competence.
Example 3: Home language on Matric certificate is Afrikaans, so you will take Afrikaans Home
Language. You will then choose English (ENG1514) as First Additional language option and you can
choose any other African language as your Language of Conversational Competence.
All modules in Group A are compulsory.
Select one module from Group B, one module from Group C OR Group D and one module from Group E.
