Students should note that during the course of their studies they would be required to have access to a computer, printer and the internet. Some of the pre-requisites and/ or co-requisites outlined in this qualification may not apply as they do not form part of the curriculum.

Purpose statement:
This qualification aims to produce graduates who are able to provide for the current needs in the business workplace in areas such as systems analysis, database development and software systems design, enhancement, management and evaluation. Successful graduates will be able to demonstrate: - Professional and ethical responsibility in their roles within the economy and society. - Proficiency in innovative, scientific, economic and managerial activities. - Understanding of underlying concepts and principles of Business Information Systems and the ability to apply this in the workplace. - Ability to access and evaluate scientific information and apply a high level of skills including problem-solving, written and spoken communication. - Competence in applying knowledge through basic research methods and practice. - Gainful economic activity and valuable contributions to society in science and technology, through a business prism. - Competencies and skills in systems analysis and design, database design and implementation, interaction design and project management. Graduates with this qualification should be able to integrate knowledge and skills to provide South Africa and other countries with people who can make a constructive contribution to the world of business and who are empowered to play leadership roles in society.
This qualification will be presented using both online and distance learning modes.

Who can register?

  • Applicants (new applicants & Unisa students who applied for admission to a new qualification) may only register if they have received an offer of placement from Unisa and have accepted the offer online. Unisa reserves the right to not process and / or to cancel your registration if it is found that you were incorrectly admitted to a qualification. 
  • Re-registering students may register for the 2024 academic year once the registration period opens.

How to choose your modules

Each Unisa qualification is structured in such a way that you need to pass a certain number of NQF level credits within a certain amount of time in order to graduate.

  • Co-requisite: Module A is a co-requisite for Module B. You want to register for Module B, but have not yet passed Module A. You must then register for both Modules A and B simultaneously. You may NOT cancel your registration for Module A unless Module B is also cancelled.
  • Pre-requisite: If Module A is a pre-requisite for Module B, you must pass Module A before you may register for Module B.

You may not register for more than the allowed maximum number of credits / modules per academic year and / or semester: 60 credits per semester or 120 credits per academic year.

The maximum number of credits do not include supplementary and / or aegrotat examinations from a previous semester. Modules taken for non-degree / non-diploma purposes also count towards the maximum number of credits allowed.

You must take your available time into consideration when choosing your modules, as this will impact your academic performance. You need approximately

  • 6 to 8 hours per week for semester modules.
  • 4 to 6 hours per week for year modules.

Curriculum for this qualification

First level

The College has removed FAC1601 and EUP1501 from the curriculum. Students who have passed
FAC1601 and EUP1501 in this qualification will retain the credit. INF1511 has changed to a
compulsory module and students who passed EUP1501 will retain the credit and will not be required to
complete INF1511 as a compulsory module.

Second level

The College has replaced FAC1601 with DSC2608, AIN2601 with ECS2601 and COS2626 with ECS2602.
Students that have passed FAC1601, AIN2601 and COS2626 in this qualification, will retain the credit
and will not be required to complete DSC2608, ECS2601 and ECS2602. FAC2601 has been removed from the
curriculum and INF2611 has changed to a compulsory module. Students who have passed FAC2601 in this
qualification will retain the credit and will not be required to register INF2611.

Third level

The College has removed MNB3701 as a compulsory module and moved AUI3702, AUI3703 and MNG3702 to
electives. AUI3701, ECS3706, ECS3708 and ECS3709 are now added as new elective modules. Students
who have already completed the modules that were replaced or moved, while registered in this
curriculum, will retain the credits and will not be required to complete the relevant replacement
modules.
